Secure and Mission Critical Facilities

Some facilities can never go offline: command centers, data centers, laboratories, emergency operations centers and communications hubs. Government agencies are investing to modernize these buildings as cybersecurity threats, extreme weather and growing digital workloads put more pressure on aging infrastructure.

Resilience by design: Mission-critical facilities are now planned around redundancy from the first design phase. Backup generation, uninterruptible power supplies, dual utility feeds and redundant cooling allow operations to continue when one system fails. More facilities are also adding microgrids and battery storage, so they can keep critical loads running during a grid outage.

Physical and cyber security together: Agencies now plan physical security and cybersecurity as a single system. Access control, perimeter protection, video surveillance and secure spaces such as SCIFs have to be coordinated with the networks and building controls that run them. Construction teams on these projects often go through background checks, escorted access and strict rules on handling information.

Building while operations continue: Many upgrades happen inside facilities that must stay operational. That calls for detailed phasing, temporary power and cooling, scheduled shutdowns and close coordination with facility managers. Careful planning keeps the risk of service interruptions low.
